Subnetting Calculation

 

In this section, you are expecting to show the calculation on how to identify the IP address that was assigned for the Ulearn System Server based on the information given in the project scenario. Explain the concept and show the calculation to identify the IP address.

Students are required to suggest private addressing scheme used in UTeM network. Explain how you calculate the subnetting using FLSM based on the number of the faculties. The number of students of each faculty is within 500 – 1000 students. Each faculty is given their network address. Assign IT Center as another subnet with their own network address. From this network address, assigned as the 5th available address as the address of the Ulearn System Server.


FLSM

Number of faculties = 10

Number of students = 500-1000

 

Have 9 subnet (Represents 8 faculties in UTeM + IT Center)

Each subnet have 500-1000 host.

Class B - (128-191) /18 = 14 host bits. Can hold 16,348 host.

Private IP Range - 172.16.0.0 to 172.16.255.255

 

SELECT IP ADDREESS

- 172.24.0.0/18 (CLASS B) address block

                - Host portion = 14 bits

                - Number of IP address supported = 16,384

                - 9 subnet with 500-1000 host address

                - Total required address = 10,000 (Assume/Take the largest host for each subnet)

 

Step 1:

- 172.24.0.0

- /18 => 1111 1111.1111 1111.1100 0000.0000 0000 => 255.255.192.0 (Subnet Mask)

 

Step 2: Find highest host address

Assume the largest subnet = 1000 host

 

Step 3: Find number of bit host portion can support highest host address

- 1000 host

- 10 bit

- 2^10 = 1024

Quantity of host = 2^H - 2 ~ 1000

So, 2^H = 2^10 (equal or more than 1000)

H = 10, 2^10 - 2 => 1022

 

Actually borrow 10bits from 14 host portion.

2^4 = 16 (have 16 subnet) only 9 subnets in UTeM

 

=> 1111 1111.1111 1111.1100 0000.0000 0000 (original = /18)

=> 1111 1111.1111 1111.1111 1100.0000 0000 (new) => 255.255.252.0

Borrow 4 bit (2^4 = 16 subnet)
